It’s no exaggeration to say that dental implants can be life-changing.

As well as restoring aesthetic, function and health to your smile, dental implants rejuvenate confidence that can often become lost through months or years of having a missing tooth. Whilst there are several ways to replace a missing tooth, implants are considered to be the gold standard because they literally become part a new part of your body, thanks to their biocompatibility. What’s more, they have the potential to last a lifetime if properly looked after.

A little more about dental implants

Dental implants are an artificial tooth root that tricks the body into believing it is receiving a new and genuine replacement. When the implant is surgically inserted into your jawbone, the surrounding tissues start to grow around it. Not only do you then have a new tooth root that will provide a home for a restoration, (like a crown or bridge) but your jawbone health is preserved.

Dental implants are the only means of replacing a missing tooth that will give your jawbone the support it needs. Unfortunately, dentures cannot offer the same support to the jawbone in this way and as a result it starts to resorb (shrink), through lack of stimulation.

What should I expect from treatment with a single dental implant?

We will run you through the options you have for replacing your missing tooth so you can make an informed decision that suits you. In the case of dental implants, patients must have sufficient bone density to proceed with treatment. If this isn’t the case, we may suggest All-On-4 treatment or send you for a bone graft.

We will take an impression of your smile, so your bespoke restoration is the right shade and shape. The implant is surgically placed into the jawbone and fuses with your jawbone over a period of 3 – 6 months. When the area has healed, your restoration can be fitted over the top, giving you back your ability to chew and smile with confidence.

What makes single dental implants so great?

  • Long-lasting: dental implants have a 90% survival rate after 15 years if they are properly looked after.
  • Care for them in the same way as your existing teeth: as they are fixed, you can look after your implant just as you would a natural tooth. This makes them a much more practical option than removable options like dentures.
  • Feel confident about smiling again: tooth loss, whether it’s a tooth that makes up your front ‘social six’ teeth or a back tooth, has the potential to knock your confidence.
  • Maintain good jawbone health: as dental implants are placed directly into the jawbone, you won’t be at risk of a process known as resorption, where the jawbone shrinks through lack of stimulation and support.
